Protection against the sun

Ronelle van der Merwe

Abstract

One of the best things about South Africa is the weather. Long hot sunny days seem to be the norm for the majority of the year and whilst this may make South Africa a wonderful holiday destination, overexposure to the sun may lead to
serious long term complications. Sunburn is normally characterised by a painful reddening of the skin as a result
of over exposure to the sun. Unfortunately, this temporary discomfort is not the only problem people who have been exposed to the sun for long periods of time are likely to face. A much more serious consequence is the damage done to the deeper skin layers. For people who are in the sun a lot this means an increased risk of skin cancer as well as premature aging and skin pigmentation.
