Chronic laxative use in the elderly

Sumari Davis

Abstract

Although constipation is not a consequence of normal ageing, elderly patients often complain about it. This may be as a result of primary constipation, it may be caused by medicines, or it may be a secondary consequence of other medical conditions.

Reduced physical activity and avoidance of high-fibre foods due to poor natural teeth, or false teeth that result in chewing difficulties, further contribute to a higher incidence of constipation in the elderly.
