Cardiovascular risk reduction

Karen Van Rensburg

Abstract

There are various risk factors, some modifiable and others not, that have the potential to increase the likelihood of a person developing cardiovascular disease (CVD). It is not possible to control all the risk factors that contribute to the development of CVD, but informing patients of the factors that are within their control can help reduce the occurrence of serious cardiovascular events, such as myocardial infarction and stroke.

People with risk factors may not always develop CVD, but the more risk factors a person has, the greater the likelihood that the person will eventually suffer from CVD.
